20% of the net profits from any of my sculpture sales will go back to the environment in British Columbia. Pat Field

Artist's History

My art had its origins in my career as a wildlife biologist. For 30 years my work has been a balance between sculpting and natural resource management.

The biologist part of my life involves engaging people in environmental issues and social decisions around how we interact with nature. It naturally followed that my passion for a better understanding of our place in nature, and our relationship with it would be reflected in my art. I see the sculpture as a way of expressing my own interests, and, more importantly, as a way of engaging people in the beauty and centrality of nature in all of our lives.

The sculptures are done in wood, soapstone, marble, granite, bronze and other materials. They range in size from tabletop to large monumental pieces. I have been very fortunate to have worked as biologist and artist many countries around the world, including Congo , Jamaica , Belize , US, Korea , Japan , New Zealand , Australia and Vietnam .

Inspiration for my pieces comes from nature and the often uneasy relationship we have with it. My hope is that my art can help people reimagine their relation with the natural world, and as a consequence help build benign and sustainable economies and communities.

Most recently I have been working with a sculpture school in Vietnam that has changed its objectives to focus on creating pieces about endangered species and sustainability in Vietnam . Seed money is given to the artists, who then produce products that can be sold abroad. Money that is generated abroad ( Canada , US and Europe) goes back to Vietnam and is split between conservation and training programs at the school. This collaborative relationship has been more satisfying than any personal accomplishments.

50% of the net profits from my designs of Vietnamese-produced sculpture on this site go directly back to the artists and craftsmen. I am proud to be part of their lives and hope to continue to be able to support their efforts in conservation.

I also am committed to returning 20% of the net profits from any of my sculpture sales back to the environment in British Columbia . This will either be by donation to local conservation agencies or to specific projects that benefit the environment.

I have been blessed with a great place to live, Castlegar B.C ., and an energetic and supportive family..
