Concept
Mr. Tien Dung (pronounced Sung in English) is a master sculptor at “Kids and Stone” which is a school and business in Vietnam . Underprivileged children aged 12-30 are helped with education and skill development in sculpture. Canada has helped with the infrastructure of this program.
Graduates who have completed a 10 year apprenticeship go to work in artisanal workplaces as highly skilled craftspeople. Pat Field and Denis Klein are mentoring and supporting some of the very accomplished senior students to help them develop their own artistic visions and techniques. It is also their hope that some of these students will stay on at the school to aid other developing artists.
Tien Dung has been instrumental in changing the school's objectives so that conservation has become a major theme of the curriculum.
Pat has been working hard to develop business and artistic relationships between the school and North American outlets.
“Awe” is piece is about the thin edge of the wedge of greater environmental awareness. It is made of grey marble on a black marble base.
The AWE inscription (Artists with Environment) is a dedication to the many artists who have worked with their communities to encourage local action for conservation.
